What is JPEG XL?
JPEG XL (.jxl) is a modern image format that makes photos about 60% smaller than JPG at the same quality, and supports HDR, transparency and lossless compression. Cameras, Apple devices and photo apps are starting to save JXL, but Chrome, Edge, Windows Photos and most websites still can't open it. This converter includes the official libjxl decoder, so it works in every modern browser.
Which format should I choose?
- JPG — opens everywhere; best for sharing photos.
- PNG — lossless, keeps transparency; larger files.
- WebP — small files for websites.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I open JXL files?
Most browsers and Windows apps don't support JPEG XL yet. Safari does; Chrome, Edge and Firefox don't by default.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The JPEG XL decoder runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes, when you convert to PNG or WebP. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.
